Cheddar Gorge
Cheddar Gorge has one of England’s most iconic and spectacular landscapes. Located in Somerset, Cheddar Gorge offers plenty for a great day trip from Bristol. The giant caves are one of the many highlights this little village, near Western-super-Mare, has to offer. You guessed it from the name, Cheddar is also renowned for the world-famous cheese, which you can try and buy in one of the many tiny shops or if even learn how to make this tasty English delicatesse.
Brecon Beacons
The Brecon Beacons are around 2 hours away from Bristol. The breath-taking mountain range in South-Wales has a wide variety of attractions for all ages. From natural caves and stunning landscapes to castles, museums and old industrial mines, showing off the cultural heritage. There are many different places to visit where you can encounter animals at adventure farms and stroll around country parks. Make sure you visit the four Waterfalls Walk near Ystradfellte and the Pontsticill Reservoir.
Malvern Hills
If you drive around 70 miles up the M5, you end up in Worcester with the fabulous Malvern Hills on the doorstep. Some of the best walking trails in the UK with superb views are waiting for you. The Malvern Hills are part of an “Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty”, with scenic views over both Herefordshire and Worcestershire. Each year, there are several festivals hosted around the Hills like the Malvern Walking Festival at the end of May.
Bath
If you rather like to go on a city trip than the countryside, make sure you’ll visit Bath, which is only 10 minutes away by train. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, Bath offers lots for culture and history lovers. The Ancient Roman baths, stunning abbey, Jane Austen birth house, and botanical gardens are just a few of the many places to see. Of course, the city is also perfect for a shopping trip and has plenty to offer for all the food and drink lovers out there.
Slimbridge
The wetland wildlife reserve Slimbridge, which is just outside Stroud is a great place to visit with the kids. There are exotic birds from all around the world in beautiful grounds set in more than 800 acres of wild reserve. The award-winning visitor centre has great facilities to learn about wildlife and conservation. It’s brimming full of birds, ducks, swans, and geese — you can even feed some of them from the palm of your hand! Even if you don’t go there with the kids, Slimbridge invites you for a quiet walk.
